We create and shape spaces tailored to you — grounded in place, inspired by nature, and built for everyday living.

With studios on Auckland’s West Coast and the East Coast of the Coromandel, we draw inspiration from these unique coastal environments. Our architectural approach focuses on how spaces connect — inside and out — because when done well, this connection brings a sense of peace, delight, and effortless living to your everyday life.

Our design philosophy is grounded in connection - between interior and exterior, home and environment, people and place. We listen closely to your story and lifestyle to create spaces that not only function but inspire. We work with you to clarify your vision, navigate challenges, and uncover creative solutions, sometimes surprising you! Through a collaborative process, we translate your needs into spaces that flow naturally, celebrate their surroundings, and respond to the rhythms of daily life. By prioritising the utilisation of the natural elements of a site - orientation, natural light, and ventilation, we transform each site’s challenges into opportunities — delivering homes that are resilient, beautiful, and effortlessly harmonious, perfectly tuned to your way of living.

Our passion is residential design in the coastal landscape. Having designed numerous homes and renovations located on the coast and lived an active outdoor life by the sea, we understand the unique demands and rewards of coastal living. We specialise in creating resilient buildings and spaces that not only withstand harsh sun, salt, wind, and rain but also respond thoughtfully to the site’s changing climatic conditions. By designing adaptable spaces that work with the natural landscape and environment, we help create high-performing homes that offer comfort, flexibility, and protection, allowing you to enjoy coastal living no matter the season or weather.

We love working on alterations and additions just as much as new builds. There’s something uniquely rewarding about reimagining existing spaces—tackling the complexities of awkward layouts, unlocking hidden potential, and creating flow where it once felt impossible. Our experience allows us to see possibilities others might overlook, turning challenging spaces into functional, beautiful areas tailored to your lifestyle. Watching clients rediscover their homes with renewed joy and usability is one of the most fulfilling parts of what we do.

CAROLYN GUNDY  Bachelor of Architecture ANZIA

I’m the founder of C-Architecture and I’m a registered Architect with 30 years of experience specialising in residential design, particularly in coastal locations. My home at Piha Beach allows me to both live and work in an ever-changing, inspiring atmosphere.  More recently I have been operating my architectural studio in the picturesque setting of Whangamata Beach.  I work between both of these amazing communities. And I have two wonderful teenage daughters that keep me busy.

As well as a love for all things architecture, I find joy in family and nature. Surfing is my passion and is a big part of my family life. I also love mountain bike riding and running in the bush.  This physical connection with nature fuels my creativity and brings a unique perspective and insight to my architectural projects.

My approach to architecture is grounded in a commitment to creating simple, highly functional beautiful spaces that feel as good as they look through enhancing awareness and relationships with the landscape. I prioritise passive, sustainable and contextually sensitive design principles.
